Grey Blending in London

Your grey doesn’t need covering. It needs designing. We use micro-highlights, lowlights and bespoke toning to diffuse grey into your natural colour so it grows out softly, not harshly. No more two-week root panic.

Sound familiar?

Is grey blending right for you?

Your colour only looks good for about ten days after an appointment. You avoid plans if your roots are showing. You’ve been dyeing the same shade for years and you’re tired of it, but you dread the grow-out. Your greys are coming through patchy and messy, not chic. You want to stop fighting your hair and start working with it.

If any of that resonates, grey blending was designed for exactly this.

The service

What is grey blending?

Grey blending is a colour technique that integrates your natural grey into the rest of your hair using highlights, lowlights and soft toning. Instead of blocking grey out with a single flat shade, we create dimension so the grey melts in.

The result is softer regrowth, no obvious root line, and colour that grows out gracefully over 6 to 12 weeks instead of looking wrong after a fortnight.

Grey blending is not full coverage. It’s not going fully grey overnight. And it’s not a root touch-up with a different name. It’s a bespoke colour design that makes your grey look intentional.

Our approach

Colour that flatters, not just covers

Before we pick up a brush, we study you. Your skin tone, eye colour, face shape, whether you sit in a warm or cool colour season. This comes first. Technique is secondary.

This matters more with grey blending than any other colour service. Grey tones are naturally cool. On a client with pale skin and dark under-eyes, going fully cool grey can add ten years. We’ve seen it happen when salons treat grey blending as a simple highlights job.

At Hair Culture, we build warmth back in where it’s needed. We balance cool silvers with soft naturals, golds, or neutral tones so the overall colour composition flatters your face, not just your hair. The blend should make you look like yourself on your best day.

Where your grey sits matters more than how much you have. Most women see it first around the face and temples, with less at the crown and back. The contrast is what we work with. Darker hair shows grey more sharply because of the colour gap; lighter bases hide it more naturally. We read the pattern and place colour accordingly.

Grey blending generally starts from around 30% grey, but the decision is always visual, never a number.

The process

How we do it

Eva and Gabby are the only two stylists at Hair Culture. Both are Sassoon-trained. When you book, you see a principal colourist from consultation through to finish. No juniors, no handoffs.

Personalised colour match

Every blend starts with a colour assessment. We determine your season, your undertone, and build a palette specifically for you. No stock shade, no nearest-match from a chart.

Technique selected per client

We use a mix of highlights, balayage, babylights, air touch, root blending and toning. The combination depends on your grey pattern, your hair history, and the result you want. There’s no single formula.

Transitioning from permanent colour

If you’re coming from years of permanent or dark colour, the first step is always colour removal. This may take one or two procedures depending on the shade and history. From there, grey blending is usually achieved in one to two visits, followed by regular toning to maintain the result.

Strand test

Mandatory for all new clients, especially if dark hair requires lightening. We test first to assess hair strength and ensure we can work safely. If lightener isn’t needed, we’ll let you know.

Cut after colour

We always recommend cutting after colouring. How the hair falls affects where the colour sits, so we shape the cut to work with the finished blend.

Your appointment

What to expect

First visit

Consultation, colour assessment, strand test if needed, then the full blending service. Allow 3 to 6 hours depending on technique and hair history. If transitioning from permanent colour, this visit may focus on colour removal first.

Week 1

You’ll enjoy the result straight away. The colour settles naturally over the first few days. No dramatic shift to wait for.

Week 4-6

All colour fades gradually, regardless of shade. This is normal. A toning appointment at 6-8 weeks refreshes the grey blend and keeps the tonal balance right.

Month 6+

If you want more brightness or dimension, we can add a few highlights at a later visit. Your colour plan evolves with your hair.

Maintenance

Toning every 6-8 weeks. Each visit 1 to 3 hours. Every appointment is individual and discussed during your consultation.

Between visits

Home care for grey blended hair

What you use at home matters. We recommend Hair Culture products selected specifically for your hair and colour.

HC Colour Shampoo & Conditioner

Essential after every grey blending service. Colour-safe formula to protect the tonal work between visits.

HC Protein Spray

Strengthening leave-in treatment. Applied before styling to maintain hair condition.

HC Moisturising Mask

Once a week. Deep hydration to keep colour-treated hair soft and manageable.

HC Heat Defence Spray & Algapur Serum

Heat protection before blow-drying. Double up with both products if using straighteners or tongs.

Purple shampoo

Not for everyone. We’ll tell you if your specific blend needs it and how often to use it.

Water filter

Hard water is one of the main causes of brassiness between visits. A shower filter makes a noticeable difference to colour longevity, especially in London.

Common questions

Grey blending FAQ

Will grey blending make my hair go brassy?

Brassiness usually comes from hard water and excessive heat tool use, not the blending itself. In salon, we use metal detox products to remove mineral build-up before toning. At home, we recommend a shower water filter and the right colour-safe shampoo. If your specific shade is prone to warmth, we’ll build cool correction into the toning formula from the start.

Will grey blending damage my hair?

We strand test every new client, especially if lightener is needed. This tells us how strong your hair is and whether we can safely proceed. If lightener isn’t required for your blend, the risk of damage is minimal. We always assess before committing to a technique.

Does grey blending work on dark hair?

Yes. Darker hair actually shows grey more sharply because of the colour contrast, which means placement matters even more. We use finer highlights and careful tonal balancing to soften the transition. The result can be striking on dark bases when the blend is designed properly.

How long does a grey blending appointment take?

A first appointment takes between 3 and 6 hours depending on the technique, your hair colour, and whether colour removal is needed. Maintenance visits run 1 to 3 hours depending on whether we’re toning only or adding highlights.

How often will I need to come back?

Most clients return every 6-8 weeks for toning. Some add a few highlights every six months for extra dimension. Every case is individual and we’ll build a schedule during your consultation.

Can I go back to full coverage if I change my mind?

Yes. Grey blending isn’t a one-way door. If you decide you want full coverage again, we can do a corrective colour application. If your hair was previously lightened, pre-pigmentation may be needed to restore depth evenly. We’ll assess and advise.

I’ve been using box dye for years. Can I still get grey blending?

Yes, but a colour removal step comes first. Box dye builds up on the hair over time and needs to be lifted carefully before we can blend. This may take one or two procedures. We always strand test first to check how your hair responds before committing to a plan.

How much does grey blending cost?

Pricing depends on the technique, your hair length, and the amount of work involved. We discuss this during your consultation so there are no surprises. You can see our full price list on our price list page.

Do I need to grow my roots out before the first appointment?

No. Come as you are. We’ll assess your current colour, your natural base, and your grey pattern during the consultation and work from wherever you’re starting.
